First-of-its-kind design is a CES 2019 Innovation Award winner
LAS VEGAS (Jan. 8, 2019) – Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. has debuted the PWD-X5, a new product that incorporates a powered subwoofer with a built-in 4-channel Digital Signal Processor (DSP) amplifier. The PWD-X5 is the first-of-its-kind for the aftermarket and is a CES 2019 Innovation Award winner in the In-Vehicle Audio/Video category.
“The PWD-X5 is the first product to combine a subwoofer and DSP amplifier into a self-contained unit,” said Mike Anderson, vice president and general manager, brand business unit, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. “Many of our customers are looking for the Alpine sound experience without building a large, complex system and the PWD-X5 is the perfect solution for them.”
The PWD-X5’s subwoofer, amplifier and DSP work together on a single platform. Measuring just 10” W x 13.5” H x 3.15” D, the PWD-X5 is small enough to be mounted under a seat, perfect for front-loaded bass. The 8-inch subwoofer has a flat diaphragm and produces quality, low-end bass without taking up a lot of space. Built into the subwoofer’s cast-aluminum enclosure is a compact, 4-channel amplifier that delivers double the power of most factory radios.
The All-In-One Solution
The PWD-X5 solves key issues experienced by vehicle owners who are not satisfied with the quality of their factory sound. The subwoofer increases the vehicle’s overall bass output and when it’s installed under a front seat, it brings the sound stage forward in the vehicle for the best bass and imaging experience. With 165-watts available to the subwoofer and 25-watts x 4 to the speakers, this all-in-one solution creates a truly enjoyable sound experience.
The internal DSP gives the installer the ability to custom tune a sound system beyond the factory head unit’s capabilities. DSP tuning of a sound system can be done wirelessly with the PWD-X5 using Bluetooth® technology and the “PWD-X5” smartphone app (available on the App Store® and Google Play™). A wired connection through a PC using the included USB cable is also available; this app can be found on the “Support” section on www.alpine-usa.com. Either format allows the user to assign inputs/outputs, crossovers and time correction. Ten bands of equalization per channel can be set and viewed in one place, so that sound adjustments can be made with real-time results. The included remote commander with rotary knob installs on the dashboard so the driver can quickly adjust volume, bass adjustment, mute and source selection.
Utilizing its Bluetooth® streaming capabilities, the PWD-X5 can also be used in nontraditional ways. In situations where the car radio cannot be replaced, such as in a classic car, music can be streamed to the PWD-X5’s Bluetooth® connection, then played through the existing speakers while utilizing the PWD-X5’s bass and amplified power. If a head unit does not exist on the vehicle, such as on a motorcycle or a side-by-side, the music streamed from a smartphone becomes the source unit for the PWD-X5. The PWD-X5’s small size allows it to be installed in hidden places like a motorcycle’s saddlebag.
